Ozone is a naturally occurring form of oxygen gas. It is common in the air after a lightening storm. Ozone is a very powerful anti-microbial and has proven to be effective in killing every type of germ that it has been tested with. It is commonly used to sterilize surgical equipment in countries where there are prion diseases that are not killed by traditional autoclave. In dentistry, we use ozone in areas with infection or to prevent infection: gingivitis and periodontal disease, deep cavities, root canal therapy, oral viral infections like Herpes Simplex and Zoster. Some dentists use ozone in their whitening protocols. Ozone breaks down into oxygen and is very safe.
